Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higer
Learning
Cloistered
between a valley of ancient hills and the meandering latent flow
of the river Chitravathi at Prasanthi Nilayam, Sri Sathya Sai
Institute of Higher Learning announces its quiet presence as a
forerunner of integral education, character building and academic
excellence.
The chaotic turbulence of degenerated education systems does
not echo in its vibrant corridors nor does the impersonality of
excessive dependence on technology choke its gates. Basking ever
in the spiritual aura of Prasanthi Nilayam, the abode of the
highest peace, the chosen seat of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba,
the Institute envisions upholding the cultural and spiritual
dignity of man. Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba founded the Institute
on November 22nd 1981. An autonomous body, it has been recognised
by the University Grants Commission as a Deemed University.
The
Institute draws its inspiration from the penetrative declaration
of Bhagawan Baba, who is also its Revered Chancellor:
Students are the very foundation of the nation. To make the
foundation strong, the people, the government, the parents, the
teachers and the students all have to coordinate their plans and
their efforts. These five elements, these five vital forces have
to work together towards this end. Students and teachers are the
most valuable asset that can render the University an ideal one.
Along with subjects related to worldly knowledge, the university
will impart instruction in ethical, moral and spiritual codes and
sadhana. It has as its goal the cultivation of student's mind
along these lines. Virtues, purity of mind, adherence to truth,
dedication to the Supreme, discipline and devotion to duty-these
qualities will be fostered in the University.
Bhagawan Baba expects the students to aspire for an education that
is for life and not for a living. Compulsory hostel living,
value-based class-work and self-reliance-oriented extra-
curricular activities have been designed to mesh, blend and
achieve a coherent development of body, mind and soul of the
student.
Over the years, the Institute has been steadfast in its endeavour
to rise to the expectations of its Founder. The success may be
judged from the fact that its discipline and high sense of
dedication continues to attract both students and academicians
from India and abroad.
Students of the Institute are scattered throughout the world.
Wherever they are, they are known to uphold truth and
righteousness, the eternal values to which they are committed as
students.

The Institute is very selective in its choice of candidates for
doctoral research. This is to honour merit. The Institute
encourages faculty development programmes and research activities
in thrust areas. Such research projects are funded by agencies of
National repute. These projects are targeted towards social and
moral relevance .
Divine
Chancellor
The Revered Chancellor, Bhagawan Baba Himself, becomes the sole
motivator and guide. His presence, His utterances and His constant
guidance in every sphere of secular and spiritual activities help
the Institute to fulfil its objective of recognising through
higher education that all activity is actually spiritual. The
students have the unique privilege of being personally directed by
him in matters relating to their academic, co-curricular,
spiritual and personal affairs. This builds a strong personal bond
between the Revered Chancellor and the students. The students are
thus able to transform the inspiration they derive from him into
good results in their own lives.
Awareness Courses
The Institute's
academic programmes have other important features as well. Notable
amongst these are the Awareness courses. These courses provide a
spiritual basis for the students and make them more sensitive to
personal growth and social development.
Value
Education
Value Education adds
value to the student's lives. They understand and appreciate the
need to inculcate love in everyday life. The Institute becomes a
practical ground for actually practising these values.
Values
based teaching of subjects
The Institute is
gradually moulding itself into a veritable role model for
value-based teaching of subjects across the curriculum.Be it the
pure sciences, the social sciences or humanities, value relevance
is being injected and recognised in every teaching module of these
branches of study. The efforts help the students to establish the
conviction that true education is for life and not for a mere
living.
Free
Education
In keeping with
Bhagawan Baba's principle that education must be offered free and
be made available to all eligible, the Institute DOES NOT CHARGE
ANY FEE WHATSOEVER, be it tuition fees, laboratory fees, library
fees, sports fees, examination fees, medical fees etc. Caution
deposits of various kinds (e.g., for the Library and the
Laboratory) are also totally waived.
Spiritual Sustenance
The Sri Sathya Sai
Institute of Higher Learning puts a lot of importance in helping
the students to develop the ability to draw sustenance from a
higher self - to recognise its presence both in manifested
creation and in oneself. Prayer plays a very important role in
this aspect. The day starts with prayer early in the morning at
the hostel. Classes begin at the Institute with the collective
singing of a universal prayer invoking the deities of all faiths.
Besides, meditation, silent sitting, community prayer through
bhajans, yogasanas, study of religious and spiritual texts, group
activities upholding the culture of the land - all of them help to
recognise respectful and loving presence of God in human life.
Important Calendar Events
Two occasions that
come annually are always important calendar events for the
Institute. They are the Annual Convocation and the Annual Sports
and Cultural Meet.
The Annual
Convocation
The Annual
Convocation held on 22nd November. The Annual Convocation is held
a day before the Revered Chancellor's Birthday. It is a solemn
function wherein the students dedicate themselves to becoming the
instruments of social change, living and spreading ideals of
speaking and living in truth and righteousness.
The
Annual Sports and Cultural Meet
The Annual Sports
and Cultural Meet is held on the 11th of January every year. This
provides an opportunity for the students to try out in the sports
field and cultural auditoriums, a host of skills, academic or
otherwise, that they have for so long learnt in the classroom. The
Revered Chancellor takes a keen interest in the Meet and students
prepare themselves using all their reliance skills to make a
loving offering of their activities to Him.
Hostel
Residence
Stay at the Hostel
is compulsory for all the students. The Hostel is more than a
residential complex for students with its attached mess. It is a
home away from home for the students.
Hostel: The Seat of Character Building and Self-Reliance
Incidentally, the students themselves manage all the activities
involved in running the Hostel. They help in managing the hostel
mess, the General Stores, the Dispensary and various other utility
centres of the Hostel. Among other things, they help weaker
students in their studies and look after the maintenance of the
Hostel building. The Hostel is the nursery where character
building actually is initiated. It is here that spiritual living
is actually practiced. It is here that Self-Reliance becomes a way
of life.
The
Institute Alumni
The Institute Alumni
are "the elder students" who inspire newer generations of
students. Their gratitude to their alma mater is expressed through
their dedicating their time to the service of society. The
Institute Alumni do commendable social service in Adult Literacy,
Medical Care, Flood and Drought Relief and disseminating Spiritual
Awareness in various states of India and Abroad.
The Institute, through all its activities, strives to become a
beacon of hope in the otherwise bleak educational scenario. It
strives to bring in the students a balanced development of Head,
Heart and Hands, so that society may find emancipation through the
influence of the products of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher
Learning.
Appreciations
Understandably, the
Institute has received high praise from eminent people, as the
following quotes testify.
To the Graduates, I would like to say;You have received all-round
instruction through the systems which your Institute appropriately
calls "Integral Education" But above all, you have received, here
a sense of Human Values - Values which are common to all the
religious faiths of the world, indeed common to human-kind."
-Shri R. Venkatraman - President of India
(Convocation,
November 1990)
"I am deeply
impressed by the infrastructure, atmosphere, equipment and human
resources organised for imparting education at Vidyagiri. The
Campuses at Prasanthi Nilayam, Brindavan and Anantapur are
invaluable assets in the crucial task of promoting Integral
Education. Indeed, these constitute a blessing of far-reaching
significance. There is much to be learnt here by the student, the
teachers, educationists and policy-makers."
- Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, President of India
(Convocation, November 1992)
It is indeed rare to
find Institutions of higher learning like the Sri Sathya Sai
Institute of Higher Learning, where students receive free
education, where voluntary service prevails, and where the
acquisition of knowledge and wisdom is combined with duty and
devotion.
What is unique at this Institute is that it is founded by Bhagawan
Baba; it is inspired by His teachings, and is guided by His
concept of a wholesome education, based on the fundamental values
of Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Non-violence."
- Rt.
Hon. Anerood Jugnauth, Prime Minister of Mauritius
(Convocation, November 1993)
"The concept of
Integral education that is a Divine gift of Bhagawan Baba to this
Institute, comes closest to ancient ideals. Blessed indeed are the
students who have had the privilege of going through an
educational programme which combines deep appreciation of the
method of modern science and technology and the ancient Indian
knowledge and wisdom accumulated over the centuries. This type of
education can be a powerful means of self-perfection and social
redemption."
- Dr.
Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister
(Convocation, November 1995)
"The students who
are passing out of the Institute here are now going to live in
different parts of India, may be even the world. The atmosphere
outside is nowhere near as pristine and pure as you have seen and
breathed here in Puttaparthi. But I am sure, if you spread just
some of the fragrance, love, purity and nobility that has been
showered on you by Bhagawan here at Puttaparthi, you shall be
contributing towards the creation of a more noble, a more pure and
a more harmonious world."
- Shri
K. Krishan Kant, Vice-President of
India (Convocation, November 1997)
"The students of
this University are not just students, but seekers of trust. The
divine guidance of Bhagawan Baba has elevated even education to
the level of worship of God. The education imparted here is of the
liberative kind. It addresses both apara and para aspects of man &
society. The higher learning that the pupils here receive,
facilitates their integral development, and enables them to become
better human beings with a finer, culturally richer character."
-Shri
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of India
(Convocation, November 1998)
OBSERVATIONS BY VISITING TEAMS
Within five years of
its existence, the Association of Indian Universities on the basis
of the report of their High Level Expert Team, which visited the
Institute in March 1986, recommended it for full membership.
The
Report of the A.I.U. Team
"The Visiting Team
is convinced that the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning,
being a unique Deemed University, can act as a model Institute and
therefore have no hesitation in recommending it for full
membership of the Association of Indian Universities."
Visiting Committee of the University Grants Commission
"Two other features
are unique. First, the Institute, including the two campuses is
fully residential, founded with the aim of imparting knowledge
with human and universal values; and second, no fees are charged
except for nominal payment for boarding in the hostels.
"The Committee members were impressed by the underlying philosophy
at the Campus. This reflected a combination of most modern
pursuits in the area of science and technology with cultural,
spiritual and traditional values of various religious traditions
of India. The Committee was also impressed by the fact that
despite the emphasis on spiritual and cultural values, no emphasis
on any specific religion were given. In this sense, the approach
is spiritual, secular and universal.
"The infrastructure of the Institute in terms of buildings,
laboratories, hostels and various other facilities required by the
students and teachers is very impressive. Quite apart from the
facilities, the management and maintenance of the infrastructure
is of the highest standard found anywhere in the country. This is
a reflection of the discipline and values, which are an integral
part of all activities at the Campus.
"Cultural expression is given an important place in co-curricular
activities. These activities are held regularly on dates
predetermined in the calendar of activities at the Institute".The
calendar of activities is very regular. Admissions, examinations,
declaration of results are all held regularly without any
interruption in the schedule.
"The Committee was
also impressed by the fact that the Institute is able to meet the
major part of its expenditure on running the campus on its own
resources. The University Grants Commission grants are, in the
total scheme of expenditure, quite marginal. It shows what can be
achieved with limited resources but with leadership and vision
brought to bear upon the educational enterprise."
